We Work for Social Justice
Unitarian Universalists are strong believers in social justice, and the Heartland Social
Action Committee helps us turn those beliefs into actions that serve the wider
community.
The committee has:
Hosted Social Action Sunday services where we:
o Created homework kits for Teachers’ Treasures
o Raised $2,330 for the Streets to Home program
o Assembled aid bags for the unhoused/panhandlers
o Assembled first-aid kits for Heart & Soul Clinic
o Assembled menstrual hygiene kits for Project Period Indy
Earned the Unitarian Universalist Association’s designation as a
Welcoming Congregation for the LGBTQ+ community, and participated
in Pride Festivals in Indy, Carmel, Zionsville, and Westfield
Collected donations for our immigrant neighbors
Worked on nonpartisan Get Out the Vote efforts and hosted letter-
writing campaigns re: state legislation
Hosted activities and discussions with our sister church, New Liberty
Missionary Baptist, to improve race relations
Collected coats and warm clothing for the unhoused
Collected gift cards for needy youth via our Holiday Giving Tree
program
Raised money for numerous nonprofits via 5 th Sunday Share the Plate
collections

Standing on the Side of Love
Standing on the Side of Love is an interfaith public advocacy campaign that seeks to harness love’s power to stop oppression
Welcoming Congregation
The Welcoming Congregation Program is a volunteer program for Unitarian Universalist congregations that want to take intentional steps to become more welcoming and inclusive of people with marginalized sexual orientations and gender identities.
Indianapolis Pride Parade
HUUC has marched in the Indianapolis Pride Parade for many years to support LGBTQ rights.
Racial Justice
Starting in the spring of of 2015, HUUC has partnered with New Liberty Missionary Baptist Church. Our goal is to spark conversations and positive change for racial justice in Indianapolis.
Gleaners Food Bank
The Social Action Committee coordinates volunteers from our church to help with Gleaners Food Bank in Indianapolis.
Meals on Wheels
The Social Action Committee coordinates volunteers from our church to help with Meals on Wheels in Indianapolis.
